{"id":1259,"date":"2015-05-20T23:39:37","date_gmt":"2015-05-20T23:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jhwlawoffice.com\/nevada-workers-comp-law-blog\/?p=1259"},"modified":"2015-05-20T23:39:37","modified_gmt":"2015-05-20T23:39:37","slug":"cancer-in-nevada-firefighters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jhwlawoffice.com\/nevada-workers-comp-law-blog\/2015\/05\/articles\/occupational-illnesses\/cancer-in-nevada-firefighters\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer in Nevada Firefighters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1260\" src=\"https:\/\/jhwlawoffice.com\/nevada-workers-comp-law-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fire-fighters.jpg\" alt=\"fire fighters\" width=\"329\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jhwlawoffice.com\/nevada-workers-comp-law-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fire-fighters.jpg 651w, https:\/\/jhwlawoffice.com\/nevada-workers-comp-law-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fire-fighters-244x300.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/>Fire fighters have a law entitling them to workers\u2019 compensation benefits under a law written especially for fire fighters.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.nv.us\/NRS\/NRS-617.html#NRS617Sec453\" target=\"_blank\">NRS 617.453<\/a> provides for a rebuttable presumption that a cancer is\u00a0work-related for fire fighters with 5 years or more of full-time, continuous employment if the\u00a0\u00a0 person was exposed to a known carcinogen and the carcinogen is associated with the disabling cancer.\u00a0 This law also gives examples of known carcinogens and the disabling cancers that are linked to those carcinogens.\u00a0 The list of known carcinogens and the disabling cancers that are associated with them is not an exhaustive list, however.\u00a0 A fire fighter may offer evidence that another substance is a known carcinogen now, or that other types of cancers are also associated with a particular known carcinogen.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the heart and lung laws that provide for workers\u2019 compensation benefits for fire fighters, the cancer law does not provide for a conclusive presumption that cancer is work-related.\u00a0 The employer of a fire fighter may offer proof that the cancer was caused by something other than exposure on the job to a carcinogen.
